PSS was established in 1985 as a maker of testing equipments for clinical test facilities (reagent manufacturers, clinical test laboratories and others). Most of the clinical tests then were performed manually. Large-scale testing facilities, however, urgently needed automated systems to cope with expanding demand for blood testing such as of tumor markers, and for that reason, PSS started collaborative development of the automated system as cooperation with established companies.
Since then, PSS developed unique equipments in the clinical test industry where the rapid expansion was made represented by these key words; such as, "isotope", "chemiluminescence", "solid phase", "random access" and "POCT".
Our business at PSS drastically changed its direction, when we met biotechnology; that is, genetic and molecular biology. PSS has been engaged in automation for biotechnology since mid-90's in order to apply our system technology to the newly developing fields.
The DNA extraction systems with PSS Magtration® Technology, using fine magnetic particles, have been widely used in the sample preparation process in DNA analysis. Through the business alliances with global bio-companies, Magtration? Technology has been in operation for genetic testing including blood-transfusion virus detection, swine-origin influenza, criminal identification, etc. PSS is proud that though it is for a niche-market we have succeeded in establishing new system concept.
After the initial public offering in 2001, PSS has focused on completing fully automated system from DNA extraction to detection by using such technologies like multiplex measurement, ultra-compact high-sensitivity system and reagents for the systems, while retaining the Magtration? Technology as core technology. We believe that these products will soon be introduced to practical use along with further increased recognition of biotechnology.
