What's Bio-strand® technology?
Along with progress in genome technology, many new medicine and new research and development for new drugs are now in progress, based on genome information. Genome information is considered to govern health, disease, capability, lifetime and others and to have a key to solve the problem in all fields related to living things, such as tailor-made medicine based on individual genome information, food, agriculture, chemistry and environment.
In particular, gene polymorphism is considered to be very important medically and a very important tool for elucidation of the causes of hereditary diseases and hereditary predisposition and also for screening of disease-related genes, and for that reason, it is studied intensively. SNP (single nucleotide polymorphism) test, one of gene diagnoses based on human genome information, is already playing an important role in achieving the tailor-made medicine.
PSS has already begun development for new medical products based on the pharmacogenomics according to the guideline of U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and put a step forward to achieve the tailor-made medicine. For more widespread use of DNA diagnoses such as SNP diagnosis, development of a DNA tip technology not only for conventional high-density high-speed processing but for analysis according to any purpose would be important.
Under such a circumstance, PSS has developed a Bio-Strand Technology, as a gene analysis technology with next-generation DNA tip, for easy, rapid and high-sensitivity gene diagnosis and for automated low-cost clinical diagnosis.
Bio-Strand® Technology is a new technology for next-generation DNA tip developed for automation of detection reaction by installing the tip in a sample pretreatment apparatus or a control unit of reaction steps. The Bio-Strand® Tip that is prepared as follows. First, hundreds of DNA probes are immobilized at a constant interval onto a plastic thread or natural resin thread (diameter: 50 to 500 μm, length: 2 to 3 m). This thread is then wound onto a core pin and enclosed into a cylindrical tip. This three-dimensional DNA, which is called Bio-Strand® tip, is automated with the Magtration® system, and the signal is detected with a dedicated scanner.
This system adopts a device called the Bio-Strand® Tip that is prepared as follows. First, hundreds of DNA probes are immobilized at a constant interval onto a plastic thread or natural resin thread (diameter: 50 to 100μm, length: 2 to 3 m). This thread is then wound onto a core pin and enclosed into a cylindrical tip. This is the Bio-strand® Tip.
As the Bio-strand® Tip enables control of immobilized DNA, you can obtain more quantitative results as compared to a conventional DNA array. In addition, you can perform operations such as hybridization and washing simply by aspirating and dispensing the reagent in a tip repeatedly. This leads to not only easy automation but freedom from contamination and shorter operation time.
Furthermore, the combination of Bio-Strand® with Magtration® Technologies can fully automate of a series of processes from gene extraction to complete analysis, processes which have been very difficult with conventional methods.
